What are dental implants?
Dental implants are a type of fixed restoration that stays in place in your mouth. You do not have to worry about plastic dentures or taking any teeth in or out at night. The base of a dental implant is much like a natural tooth root when placed in your jawbone. A natural-looking tooth crown is fixed to the implant after healing.
You might be confused about implant part terms, like custom abutments, but we will explain the whole process in easy to understand language at our West Village, NY dental office.
Are dental implants right for me?
Dr. Bracy will examine your teeth and gums thoroughly—which may include x-rays—to make sure dental implants are the best choice for your smile and your health. All cosmetic dentistry starts with an exam and a smile chat. During this chat, you’ll also share your goals for your smile with Dr. Bracy.
Why should I replace my missing teeth?
Often patients will lose a tooth due to a failed root canal or deep cavity and decide not to replace it with an implant because “no one can see it,” or “my insurance doesn’t cover implants.” In many cases, this is a mistake and can lead to unintended consequences.
First, the adjacent and opposing teeth can shift into the area of the missing tooth. This can dramatically affect the function and health of these teeth.
Second, the bone in the area of the missing tooth can shrink away and also affect the health of the adjacent teeth.
Additionally, if you lose a tooth on the other side in the future, the function can be compromised, and patients always wish they had replaced the first tooth that was lost.
Finally, when teeth shift, it can impact the way you speak, chew, and even lead to erosion on your existing teeth. Erosion can mean cavities, breakage, and puts you at further risk for future dental issues and tooth loss.
What are the benefits of dental implants compared with dentures?
Dental implants are fixed in your mouth. They are like having your very own natural teeth. In many cases, they are a better choice to replace teeth than a dental bridge or removable denture. A dental bridge involves having procedures done to two adjacent teeth, so the bridge has something to rest on.
Both dental bridges and removable dentures are not as good for your jawbone as dental implants. Dental implants help preserve your bone, whereas the bone starts shrinking away over time with bridges and dentures.
In many cases, patients elect to replace a failing dental bridge with implant options. And a denture can slip and fit loosely over time—unlike dental implants. Most importantly, dental implants restore your cosmetics and function if you lose a tooth.
You may also opt for implant-supported dentures—dentures affixed with dental implants.
What brand of dental implants do you use?
Dr. Bracy only uses the best quality, brand name dental implants, such as Straumann, Zimmer, and Nobel Biocare. This is a very important implant question to ask your dentist!
Sometimes, you might see advertisements for a low priced dental implant. Often these implants are generic brands! These generic brand companies can go out of business and cannot provide you with maintenance parts if something goes wrong years later. The same goes for having an implant done outside the United States. It might seem like a cost-saving move, but if something goes wrong, foreign or generic dental implant replacement parts may not be able to be ordered.
