Helpful Hints to Getting the Best Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers are an excellent option to treat discolored, misshapen or not so pretty teeth. A veneer is essentially a covering that goes over the front of the tooth and hides any of the defects in the natural tooth. It is one of our more popular cosmetic dental treatments here at our West Village dental office. Many of our patients turn to google and the internet for advice on getting porcelain veneers, so we put together this blog post on getting the best porcelain veneers!

  1. Ask to see what the final veneers will look like before you even get started! This might sound like an obvious point, but many veneer procedures are done without the patient seeing the final teeth from the start. Good dental veneers take planning, and part of the planning is the patient and the dentist visualizing the final veneers. So tell your dentist exactly how you want your veneers to look. And then it is up to your dentist and his dental lab to plan the design of the veneers and show you how they will look. The dentist can fabricate a wax model of the final veneer design or can show you a digital design. This process is called a “diagnostic wax-up” and it helps to eliminate any surprises when it comes to the day of inserting them.
  2. Consider whitening your teeth before getting veneers. Dental veneers are made of porcelain and after they are cemented in, they will not respond to teeth whitening or bleaching. Your dentist will match the veneers to the other existing teeth in your mouth so that everything matches. Thus, you want your teeth to be the final shade of white before getting veneers. This way everything is the final shade of white that you want to live with for years! Once a veneer is cemented the only way to make it whiter is to have it removed and redone in a lighter shade. Here at Keith Bracy, DDS we recommend Kor whitening before getting veneers.
  3. Ask your dentist about which type of porcelain they will use and about the dental laboratory fabricating the veneer. There are a few different types of porcelain and ceramics to make dental veneers. They all have pros and cons but some types look better, while other types sacrifice some esthetics for strength. Knowing which type will give you the longest lasting results and look the best is key. Furthermore, just as important as your dentist is the dental lab technician that will actually fabricate the porcelain veneer. He or she is actually doing the artistry and following the instructions of your dentist. Your dentist should be able to tell you the name of the dental lab and in many veneer cases, the patient actually visits the laboratory so that the technician can look at the shade of the teeth and other features. Here at our West Village dental office, we work with the finest dental laboratories and will select the best one for your veneer dental work.
