At our West Village dental office, we get a lot of questions about keeping Invisalign aligners clean. There seems to be a lot of confusion out there over aligner cleaning methods. Dr. Bracy has heard and read about all sorts of methods from denture cleaner to special scrub brushes. However, the real instructions for cleaning Invisalign aligners are simple!
You want to clean your aligners at least once a day, and usually before putting them back in after a snack or meal. Clean them before bedtime and also when you wake up, as part of your normal hygiene regime. Remember, for best Invisalign results you need to wear your clear aligners at least 20 hours a day. Make sure your hands are clean. Never use hot or very warm water to clean the aligners. The heat can distort the aligner material. Using cool water and a soft toothbrush and a little toothpaste, gently scrub the aligner. Rinse well, before inserting. Skip the denture soaks and mouthwash, these can discolor the aligners and also negatively affect the aligner material.
The makers of Invisalign, Align Technology, also make Invisalign Cleaning Crystals. These are basically a soak to refresh your aligners. Simply add the Invisalign Cleaning Crystals to some cool water and pop your aligners in it. In about 15 minutes of soak time, you’ll have cleaner aligners. All new Invisalign patients receive a sample pack of the Invisalign Cleaning Crystals in the new Invisalign patient starter kit. We also have plenty in supply in our West Village dental office, if you want to try some!
